Lauterbrunnen Valley is a real-life fairy-tale. It is a timeless storybook village ripped straight from the pages.

I was able to visit this magical village in the Fall of 2018, and very few times in my life have I left somewhere with the same feeling that Lauterbrunnen gives me. So, here is your ultimate guide to things to do in Lauterbrunnen.

Things to Do in Lauterbrunnen Switzerland

Waterfalls, Waterfalls, Waterfalls

The picture-perfect valley waterfalls in Lauterbrunnen are real and they are incredible. The most recognizable waterfall is Staubbach Falls. Located in the heart of the valley, this 300 meters (984-foot) waterfall dominates the landscape and is very easy to access.

Take a short walk through the town to reach the base of the waterfall. If you are up for it, climb to see the backside of the waterfall. This is about a 0.4 moderately trafficked out and back trail and offers beautiful and unique views of the valley. There are also free hiking poles provided at the base to use at your disposal. Just another reason to love Switzerland!

Lauterbrunnen is home to 72 waterfalls total, and lucky for us most are easily accessible along the road. Roam down the town’s main road to continue to see impressive waterfall and valley views. You may even get stopped by some cows along the way like I did!

Trummelbach Falls is another popular waterfall in Lauterbrunnen. Continue walking down the main road for 40 minutes or consider taking the bus to this impressive waterfall. This waterfall is located inside of the mountain, and you can pay a small fee to experience it.

Trummelbach Falls costs CHF 12/adult and CHF 5/child age 6-15

Trummelbach falls consists of 10 glacier waterfalls and is accessible by walkways and tunnels carved out of the mountain. This is an absolute must-do while in Lauterbrunnen.

Endless Hikes

Switzerland is known for its awe-inspiring alps, and Lauterbrunnen is no exception. With all the gorgeous views and waterfalls comes a hiker’s paradise.

Enjoy a hike to the famous Staubbach Falls or down the main street for enchanting views of the valley.

For more of a challenge, hike to Murren! This is a 3.9 point-to-point trail that takes you from the valley of Lauterbrunnen to Murren and is not for the faint of heart though. With its 2,368 feet of elevation in just under 4 miles, be sure to pack plenty of food and water.

In fact, on my trip, I went hang gliding in Interlaken and I would highly recommend making the trip to experience this.

Jungfraujoch

One of the most iconic attractions in all of Switzerland is Jungfraujoch, also known as The Top of Europe. Jungfraujoch is easily accessible from many parts of Switzerland, and Lauterbrunnen is no exception.

With its expensive price tag, this excursion may be easy to overlook. I opted to hang-glide in Switzerland over visiting Jungfraujoch. My budget was tight and I had to choose only one due to their price tags.

However, if I could do it over again, I would find a way to visit Jungfraujoch. Jungfraujoch lies at 11,362 feet above sea level but can be seen from many locations in the Swiss valley. Even from the valley, it looks impressive. Waking up every morning and catching a glimpse of the snowy paradise atop the mountain just fueled my interest in visiting.

Located a short 45-minute train ride away from nearby Grindlewald, Jungfraujoch offers an impressive observatory, breathtaking mountain views, and cold crisp winter snow year-round. Be sure to dress warmly for this adventure.

Basque in the Views

Many people scour the internet for inspiration for their next vacation. Lauterbrunnen is one of those places where everyone has seen the iconic photo of the valley, but very few have been to see it with their own eyes!

And guess what! It is MORE impressive in person.

If you are not into hiking, no worries, Lauterbrunnen offers many beautiful photo spots in the adorable valley. Bring a nice camera and relax and enjoy your day photographing all it has to offer.

Schilthorn

Schulthorn is a popular overlook located a cable car ride away from Murren. This spot was made popular by the 1969 James Bond film, “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”.

If you are looking for a view over the alps, this is the spot for you. Also, popular during sunrise and sunset, Schilthorn is a beautiful mountain top overlooks worth visiting on your trip to Lauterbrunnen.

Let me tell you, Murren is incredible. Take the day in Murren to walk around, enjoy beautiful views, and breathe in the fresh mountain air.

If you are feeling adventurous, Murren is also home to the Via Ferrata Hike – the most intense hike in the region off the side of the cliff. Rather than explaining it, look up “Murren Via Ferrata Hike” on Youtube to see how truly adrenaline-pumping this thrill is!

Grindlewald

Grindlewald is situated an hour train ride from Lauterbrunnen and is home to many gorgeous hikes and extreme adventures.

Catch the gondola up to the top of First, or choose to hike it for a full day of intense adventure. One you reach the top of First you will find many gorgeous overlooks, lakes, ziplines, and scooters down the mountain.

When I visited we opted for the Gondola, but if I could go back I would take the scooter down the mountain for an ultimate unique thrill!

Grindlewald is also a gorgeous town with many shops, cafes, and hotels. It also is a starting point for so many amazing hikes.

In the winter, Grindlewald is home to one of Switzerland’s most popular ski resorts. So no matter what time of year you visit you are sure to have an adventure in Grindlewald.
